[ARCHIVED] Maricopa County Creates Individual Assistance Center for Gila Bend Residents

MCDOT-flood

Maricopa County has a new resource for individuals and businesses affected by flooding in Gila Bend.  The Department of Emergency Management has created a webpage that compiles contact information for more than 20 government and community organizations helping with recovery efforts.  This Individual Assistance Center (IAC) is accessible at Maricopa.gov/GilaBendRecovery.

“We know people in Gila Bend have a long road ahead of them.  In addition to cleaning up the damage and rebuilding, many residents have more immediate needs for food, shelter, or other necessities,” said Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jack Sellers, District 1.  “The goal of the Individual Assistance Center is to give residents a single place to go to find the resources that can support them during this difficult time.”

“Gila Bend is a special place, and people there are hurting right now.  They need their county government to step up and help and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” said Supervisor Steve Gallardo, District 5, who represents the area.  “I encourage folks to go to Maricopa.gov/GilaBendRecovery to get connected to organizations involved in the recovery effort.”

When individuals, households, or businesses are affected by an emergency or disaster, assistance may come in a variety of ways, including government and/or nonprofit, volunteer and faith-based organizations. Although disaster assistance programs may not cover all recovery or repairs, they can help people get back on their feet.

For those in Gila Bend who may need access to computers or other assistance, help is available at the Gila Bend Library located at 777 N Logan Ave, Gila Bend, AZ 85337.  You can use a computer at the library or bring your own device and use the library’s WiFi. Staff is available to assist you with navigating the website and accessing resources, including Spanish translation.   Site navigation helpers will be at the Gila Bend Library during their regular library business hours. WiFi is available outside the library and is available afterhours.

BACKGROUND

On August 14th, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jack Sellers declared a local emergency due to the flooding in Gila Bend.  The declaration gives Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management access to emergency funds to be used to support response activities. Several other county departments are assisting with the recovery.
