AACE Awards

Three MCDOT Employees Honored by Arizona Association of County Engineers (AACE)

The Arizona Association of County Engineers (AACE) has awarded Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) Project Management Manager Randy Dunsey with the 2017 Annual Robert C. Esterbrooks Award for Rising Star.  Nicolaas Swart, Transportation Systems Management Division Manager and Michelle Markson, Engineering Division Administrative Assistant also received honorable mentions in the categories of engineering and engineering support, respectively.

AACE established the Annual Robert C. Esterbrooks Award Program to recognize individual county employees whose service fosters innovation, effectiveness, better communication and efficiency that results in a better product delivered to the communities they serve.

2017 Annual Robert C. Esterbrooks Award for Rising Star Award:  Randy Dunsey

Randy DunseyRandy Dunsey joined the Maricopa County Department of Transportation in 2013 as a Traffic Engineer and Project Manager.  Prior to that Randy worked with AECOM Technical Services in Pennsylvania.  He also completed an Internship with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.  As a Project Manager, Randy managed the new traffic signals, traffic signal upgrades, corridor and intersection safety improvements, and the installation of Intelligent Transportation Systems. He led the effort to streamline MCDOT’s project development process.  In September 2015, Randy was appointed as MCDOT’s Project Management Branch Manager. Randy’s new duties include the oversight of MCDOT’s $500 million Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

2017 Annual Robert C. Esterbrooks Engineering Award Honorable Mention:  Nicolaas Swart

Nicolaas SwartNicolaas Swart joined MCDOT in 1998 and brought his extensive experience in the design of rural and urban planning and traffic operations to Maricopa County. He joined the Traffic Engineering Branch where he focused on designing safe roadways that promote mobility throughout the county. In 2006, Nicolaas was appointed as the Traffic Management Division Manager. He also became MCDOT’s Program Manager for AZTech, a regional partnership of local and transportation agencies committed to improving traffic management through ITS across jurisdictional boundaries. 

2017 Annual Robert C. Esterbrooks Engineering Support Award Honorable Mention:  Michelle Markson

Michelle MarksonMichelle Markson has worked for Maricopa County since 2003 and provides support for MCDOT’s Engineering Division. She has been instrumental is streamlining processes for efficiency in order to provide greater customer service to the public. This is the case with Maricopa County’s Patent Easement Abandonment process.  Michelle volunteered to take on the duties of processing the requests for patent easement abandonment and improved the process for greater efficiency.

Each of these employees understand that by setting high standards for themselves and achieving them, not only do they succeed, but so does MCDOT, Maricopa County and its more than four million residents. MCDOT congratulates these employees for receiving these prestigious awards.
